SCREAM IF YOU WANNA GO FASTER
Geri Halliwell
(EMI)
The Spice Girl voted least likely to succeed on her own is doing just fine, thank you very much, on the follow-up album to her 1999 solo debut, Schizophonic.
And I'm not just talking about her already successful first single, a campy cover of the '80s disco classic, It's Raining Men, from the Bridget Jones's Diary soundtrack.
Working again with a variety of dance-oriented producers and a long list of co-writers, the artist formerly known as Ginger Spice still has fun and female empowerment on her mind.
Check out such tracks as the title tune, the Ricky Martin-inspired Shake YourBootie Cutie, Feels Like Sex, Strength Of A Woman, and Lovey Dovey Stuff.
She also appears to be getting her heart broken on the more serious Calling, or
wishing for romance on Love Is The Only Light, which could both be right out of her pal George Michael's songbook.
As she sings on Heaven And Hell: "It's heaven, it's hell, being Geri Halliwell."
She falters most seriously on the midtempo, way too earnest, Circles Round The Moon, which recalls a coffee commerical jingle or a TV sitcom theme. Same goes for the Spice Girl-reminiscent Don't Call Me Baby.
For the most part, expect well-crafted if
extremely fluffy pop and you won't be disappointed.
In the meantime, where's the obvious duet with Michael or newer friend, Robbie Williams?
So far Halliwell has no plans to tour
although she will be in Toronto on June 9
as part of the annual Fashion Cares event.
