LIVE FROM MARS
By DARRYL STERDAN
LIVE FROM MARS Ben Harper (Virgin/EMI) Here's something we didn't know about singer-songwriter Ben Harper: He plays sitting down. Now, while that might detract from the visual impact of seeing him in an arena, this two-CD live set demonstrates he has more than enough musical skill and personality to make up for it. Drawing on tracks from his four studio albums and augmenting them with some unexpected covers (Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing, anyone? Whole Lotta Love? The Verve's The Drugs Don't Work?), Harper delivers a solid (if long-winded) set of folky blues-rock jams. Whether he's putting his crack band through its paces or holding court with just his guitar and smoky voice, it's more than enough to keep the audience on its feet, if not the singer.
