The Peel Sessions 1991 - 2004
(Island/Universal)

According to the BBC's online archive, Polly Jean Harvey and various incarnations of her band performed nine times on influential DJ John Peel's show between 1991 and 2000, playing more than 60 songs in total. We'd love to tell you The Peel Sessions 1991 - 2004 collects all those appearances, but sadly, that's not the case.

Instead, this one-disc set compiled by Harvey has just 11 numbers from four appearances, along with a 2004 tune from a tribute to the late DJ. Not that we're complaining about the cuts she chose.

The first four songs were taped before her groundbreaking 1992 album Dry, plenty of the tunes are rarities that only graced B-sides or soundtracks, and every one is fuelled by the sensuality and live-wire intensity that are Harvey's signature.

We'd still love to hear the other 50 titles in this catalogue -- but this still makes for a pretty good start.
