TORONTO - There was a special moment in Don Henley's show last night at the Molson Amphitheatre when the former member of the Eagles finally revealed his legendary feisty nature.
The 52-year-old singer-songwriter, touring in support of his latest solo effort, Inside Job, was introducing the new anti-UFO song, They're Not Here, They're Not Coming.
Henley recalled the famed "Roswell Incident" that occurred in New Mexico in 1947 -- the year he was born.
When one younger fan in the audience made some disparaging remark about his advancing years, Henley stopped in his tracks, pointed to the heckler and said: "I can still kick your ass."
The funny, confrontational exchange was in sharp contrast to the rest of the decidedly mellow evening of music, which saw Henley and a tight seven-piece rock band make their way through material from the Texas-born singer's hugely successful solo career and some of the Eagles' catalogue including Life In The Fast Lane, and the encore numbers, The Long Run, Hotel California and Desperado.
It was a slick, polished performance with big sound, first-rate lighting, and a pretty set design by way of hanging stone and stained glass from a cathedral offset by a red, velvet backdrop.
Sadly though, there wasn't a lot of heart or energy over the course of two hours and 10 minutes.
That finally came with the introduction of an 11-member gospel choir, who came on board for the two new standout songs, Everything Is Different Now -- featuring some outstanding vocal work from the raspy-voiced tenor -- and Workin' It.
If I was Henley, I'd have that enthusiastic group on stage for the entire show, just to kick the energy level up an important notch.
Otherwise, it was a pleasant enough night of music with the boomer-heavy crowd of 6,000 going nuts for Henley's impressive list of hits -- Dirty Laundry, Sunset Grill, The Last Worthless Evening, The End Of The Innocence, New York Minute, The Boys Of Summer, The Heart Of The Matter, All She Wants To Do Is Dance, and the new single, Taking You Home.
To his credit, as the evening progressed and the temperature got unseasonably colder, he did seem to warm up.
"Ah, springtime in Canada," he said of the inclement weather. "It's okay. I like it."
We like you too, Don. Just don't be afraid to show more of your true nature.
