Album Review: Faith Hill

CRY
By JANE STEVENSON

CRY
Faith Hill
(Warner)

Hill, who currently has the No. 1 album in the U.S. and the No. 3 record in Canada, moves even further away from her country-music roots on her latest release.

That's why she's called a crossover artist, I guess.

But will her country music fans think she's forsaken them with such a strong emphasis on R&B, rock and pop this time out?

Certainly, the combination of slickly produced up-tempo songs (Free, Unsaveable, I Think I Will) and ballads (When The Lights Go Down, Baby You Belong, Back To You and You're Still Here) isn't that memorable, with the exception of a few notable tracks: The soaring title tune and first single, the gospel-drenched One, the Pink-written If You're Gonna Fly Away, and the anthemic ballads Stronger, If This Is The End and This Is Me.

One major misstep is Beautiful, which finds the lovely looking Hill doing a spoken-word intro. (More on Faith Hill)
