Hynde mourns Clash pal
TORONTO -- Chrissie Hynde, the American-born singer-songwriter who formed The Pretenders with three Englishmen in London in 1978, says the passing of her good friend Joe Strummer of The Clash was a big shock.

Strummer died of an apparent heart attack just before Christmas last year.

Ask outspoken Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde -- now 51 years old -- how much longer she'll keep on rocking and she'll give you a very practical answer.

"With me -- at this point -- it's just how much longer my knee can hold up," said Hynde yesterday afternoon, relaxing in a chair in her posh yet cozy and candlelit suite at a downtown Toronto hotel prior to the Pretenders' gig tonight at the Hummingbird. "I've always had knee injuries, just on the one knee, but it's enough to bring you down."
