Album Review: Enrique Iglesias

ESCAPE
By DARRYL STERDAN

ESCAPE
Enrique Iglesias
(Interscope/Universal)

"You can run, you can hide / But you can't escape my love," vows Enrique Iglesias on the look-who's-stalking title track of Escape.

A couple of years ago during the Latin-pop explosion, Enrique was equally unavoidable. Now that Ricky Martin has shaken his last bon-bon, we'll have to see how Julio's son fairs on this second English album.

Surprisingly, Escape is mostly a cut above the norm -- Iglesias is a superior vocalist to begin with, and many of these cuts boast solid, mature songcraft that doesn't resort to the novelties or cliches we've come to expect from Latin pop.

A little less smouldering balladry, a few less flamenco guitars and a few more rock numbers next time and Enrique might just escape the Latin-pop crash.
