Concert Review: Enrique Iglesias

Corel Centre, Ottawa - Sept. 18, 2002
Enrique turns off the lights, turns on the ladies
By DENIS ARMSTRONG -- Ottawa Sun

OTTAWA -- Be careful ladies, what you wish for.

If you couldn't stand the Latino heat, you had to get out of the Corel Centre last night for Enrique Iglesias. (SQUEAL!)

Things got off to a shaky start for the Latin heartthrob.

First, there was the mysterious cancellation of two opening acts, leaving Iglesias flying solo in an abbreviated concert appearance.

Then there was a long delay as security escorted Iglesias' main squeeze, tennis superstar Anna Kournikova, in. (GUY SQUEAL!)

Finally, after an hour-long delay, virtually as long as the concert itself, Iglesias turned off the lights and turned on the ladies.

LIKE SEDUCTIVE DAD

With more than a passing resemblance to his father, (SQUEAL!) the notoriously seductive Julio, Enrique's become the biggest-selling Spanish-language artist in the world.

But for all his musical pedigree, Iglesias was still working the post-Ricky Martin (SQUEAL!) funky charm with the ladies.

Most of Iglesias' fanbase, like his father, was young women, most arriving in pairs and shaking at the knees.

Draped in sheer white scrims that cast giant Enrique shadows, which caused a volcanic eruption of screams, the 7,000 fans in attendance were already on their feet at the first notes of Give Me Love. (SQUEAL!)

Backed by a bevy of Mediterranean beauties on vocals and a four-piece rock band identified simply as Grant, Tony and Jamie, (SQUEAL!) the second-generation crooning heartthrob, dressed like a Calvin Klein underwear model, played his sexy Latin image off that of a grittier, tougher-sounding stadium rocker. (SQUEAL!)

Ensuring the girls got what they came for, Enrique's every move was projected onto a big video screen.

"I just want to do the hits for you tonight," Iglesias breathed. (SQUEAL!)

The early part of the show was given to splashy dance-oriented productions, complete with juicy red and periwinkle mood lighting for Rhythm Divine and Bailamos. (SQUEAL!)

During his duet Could I Have This Kiss Forever, Iglesias frolicked (SQUEAL!) and tumbled to something resembling the missionary position. (BIG SQUEAL!)

Later, Iglesias did a quick 'unplugged' turn on a couple of his earlier Spanish hits (SQUEAL in SPANISH!) before the romantic ballad Be With You and even covers of Stand By Me and Prince's Purple Rain.

KOURNIKOVA CUTS A RUG

Ironically, the concert lagged precisely when Iglesias concentrated on the music.

Things picked up with Don't Turn Off The Lights (SQUEAL!) and Escape before encoring with, what else, Hero. (SQUEAL!)

On the floor, as the encore proceeded, security personnel cleared off a large area for Kournikova to step out and groove with the music. (MANY, MANY GUY SQUEALS!)

Enrique came out for two more encores -- Be With You and Depeche Mode's Just Can't Get Enough.

Truly a hot, hot night at the Corel Centre.

"Enrique looks great, he's sexy," purred Ida. "He's great all by himself," added Heather, 19.

"Yea, he doesn't need no help like the Back Street Boys," agreed friend Amanda.

But the laurels go to Ronaldo, the 22-year-old Enrique wannabe, complete with crocheted cap, dark sunglasses and a girlfriend for every day of the week.

"I like him because he's great with the ladies. Julio's my idol. They're not scared of what people think."

Apparently not. He gave the fans almost everything they wanted.

But charging top dollar for a concert that's just over an hour long, particularly after waiting for nearly an hour, is inexcusable.

JAM! Rating: 3 out of 5 (More on Enrique Iglesias)
