Album Review: Natalie Imbruglia

WHITE LILIES ISLAND
By JANE STEVENSON

WHITE LILIES ISLAND
Natalie Imbruglia
(BMG)

It's been four years since this Aussie-born, England-based actress-turned-singer turned heads with her good looks and huge pop hit Torn, from her 1998 debut Left Of The Middle.

But the chance of a sophomore slump for this artist would appear to be slim to none.

Imbruglia re-emerges Tuesday with a meticulously crafted and polished-sounding 12-track collection on which she hooks up with several A-list producers, including Gary Clark, Pat Leonard, Ian Stanley, Phil Thomally and Pascal Gabriel.

After the raw opening track, That Day, Imbruglia kicks into solid singles mode with the lush electronic pop of Beauty On The Fire, Do You Love?, Sunlight and Come September, the acoustically warmer Satellite and Butterflies, and the poppy Wrong Impression.

Also good is the dreamy, slower-tempoed Goodbye.

On the minus side, she sounds a couple of distinctly false notes with the bland Everything Goes and the generic Hurricane and Talk In Tongues.

And be forewarned: Some of the lyrics on Come September -- specifically "The souls that burn, Will twist and turn, And find you in the dark, No matter where you run" -- take on new poignancy in light of the events of 9/11.

So far Imbruglia has no overseas touring plans. (More on: Natalie Imbruglia).
