Album Review: Incubus

MORNING VIEW
By DARRYL STERDAN

MORNING VIEW
Incubus
(Epic/Sony)

Back in the day, this Cali quintet were a funky, Red Hot Chili Pepper-flavoured rap-metal outfit. And as the Peppers have become blander over the years, Incubus have become a little more angelic and a little less Satanic with every release.

Morning View, their fourth full-length and followup to 1999's commercial breakthrough Make Yourself, is their most commercial, thoughtful and poppy outing yet. And the most predictable.

There are plenty of summery harmonies and hummable hooks to go with the standard rubberized guitars and whip-crack hip-hop beats. A few offtime rhythms and singer Brandon Boyd's soaring howl add touches of sonic distinction now and then, but ultimately, Morning does not become a band called Incubus. Nor should it.
