BECOME YOU
Indigo Girls
(Sony)
Veteran acoustic folk-pop duo Amy Ray and Emily Saliers return with a back-to-basics album, in stores on Tuesday, that finds them in a solid songwriting groove.
Not that 1999's Come On Now Social, featuring guests Joan Osborne and Sheryl Crow, was a dog. Far from it.
Become You is just a return to more stripped-down production courtesy of Peter Collins, the man behind their 1992 collection Rites Of Passage and 1994's Swamp Ophelia.
This isn't to suggest there isn't interesting instrumentation, like Carole Isaacs' accordion on the title track, the addition of sax by Dan Higgins on You've Got To Show or strings on Hope Alone.
But song highlights are mainly of the poignant and pretty variety -- Deconstruction, You Got To Show, Collecting You, Our Deliverance and Saving Me -- all written by Saliers, as it happens.
Ray's strongest moments occur on the more rollicking and rootsy Bitter Root and Starkville and the slow and sexy Nuevas Senoritas.
Indigo Girls performed a show at Lee's Palace last Tuesday, but hopefully they will return to show off this strong new material.
