BIZAAR
By MIKE BELL

BIZAAR
Insane Clown Posse
(UNI/ISLAND)

There is no God.

Kids love clowns.

It's one of those simple truths that you can set your reality compass to.

And what else do kids love?

Truckers, sailors and teamsters and the colourful colloquialisms they utter.

The two together? Magic.

Hence the popularity of Insane Clown Posse, the potty-mouthed, wrestling, hardcore hip hop act that's bluer than Steve's clue-giving canine friend.

The crew's latest album Bizaar, takes a step back from last year's way, way, WAY too far over the top The Amazing Jeckel Brothers, and closer to the offensive, but in a cartoonish and kid-brother-learning-his-f-words (and a-words, b-words, c-words, d-words...) kind of way, that was The Great Milenko.

It's a Chris Rock meets Romper Room thing, and it's extremely transparent in its attempts to offend.

And sure it's violent, misogynistic, reprehensible, sick, homophobic, twisted (did I mention violent)... but it's also sort of good.

You see, as easy as it would be to hate the abuse-spewing ICP, that would mean you'd have to ignore their obvious talent.

They're kind of like a pancaked Eminem (odd considering that Slim Shady and ICP have a longstanding feud) -- extremely good rappers who, despite their propensity for crossing the good taste line, have produced some stellar hip hop tracks that most MCs would kill for.

The dilemma then is for the listener to grapple with: support something you find morally bankrupt yet is actually good music; or avoid something because it pushes a button or buttons you're not to comfortable having pushed, and miss out on some pretty decent beats?

Actually, if you want the problem distilled into one song, check out the appropriately titled Please Don't Hate Me.

If you can make it through all four minutes of this vile, disgusting but well produced and sort of funny Eminem dis, then you're ready for the full ICP treatment.

If not, have a peanut and wait for the real circus to come to town.
