DANCE OF DEATH
Iron Maiden
(Columbia)
Stick around long enough, keep your chops up, and you just may outlast self-parody.
That seems to be the case with veteran U.K. metal band Iron Maiden, whose 13th studio release is one surprisingly solid monster rock record.
Dance of Death delivers everything the millions of Maiden fans want from the act and does so without sounding stale, dated or -- the Stonehenge-y epic title track aside -- silly.
In fact, they sound great.
Though slightly seasoned, Bruce Dickinson's voice is a timeless metal roar, and the band attacks the tracks with a raw energy -- kept alive by unobtrusive, somewhat earthy production -- that would put most other 30-year rock bands to shame.
In fact, a group half Maiden's age could only hope to sound so loud, so good, so fresh, and so without the unintentional laughs.
