Album Review: Alan Jackson

WHEN SOMEBODY LOVES YOU
By FISH GRIWKOWSKY

WHEN SOMEBODY LOVES YOU
Alan Jackson
(Artista/BMG)

It makes me sad to think that Alan Jackson could get to this low, but he sure did. Never mind railing against dressing well and sushi in favour of potatoes and meat, the song www.memory has to be one of the last hot country songs ever made, because it's getting pretty damned embarrassing at this juncture.

Remember that I like Jackson a lot. He's got a good voice, his songs have always been catchy and he even had the brains to cover Kieran Kane with I'll Go On Loving You, a real hot bedroom tune. But whatever. This album is so boring I could barely get through it. The first song, like It's Alright to Be a Redneck ("alright" isn't even a real word), shows that Jackson is scraping the bottom of the barrel for his fan base. Which is all right in moderation, but you need more than Jim Croce-style wispy love songs in this day and age of country music. He sings halfheartedly on The Thrill is Back, and boy is that ever a clever spin on The Thrill is Gone.

Ah. Then, the song: www.memory. The sticker in the record store tells us this is the track to listen to. Except there's no song there. Blah.

The only tune I really like is hokey as hell, but its title is good and has that Little Bitty energy this album lacks. It's called Three Minute Positive Not Too Country Up-tempo Love Song, which shows Jackson understands the problems with his genre, at least here. Avoid this and get his greatest hits, where the gems are.

You heard me.
