Album Review: Jackson, Janet

20 Y.O.
Janet takes step forward

Janet Jackson
20 Y.O.
(Virgin/EMI)

"There's something to be said for not saying anything," theorizes Janet Jackson. "I've covered a lot in my 20 years. And I've uncovered a lot." That spoken-word intro neatly sums up her 10th CD.

20 Y.O. -- supposedly the title reflects how old the 40-year-old Jackson feels, and commemorates the 20th anniversary of her Control CD-- contains no grand statements or deep thoughts. But it does have plenty of playful sexual exhibitionism.

Continuing to base her self-worth around what she imagines to be her timeless sexual appeal, Jackson offers up another lightweight set of bump 'n' grind dance-pop comeons and rainstorm pillow-talk ballads. Most of the nookie-obsessed songs come bearing interchangable titles such as So Excited, Show Me, Do It 2 Me, This Body, With U and Love 2 Love -- not to mention the occasional cringe-worthy lyric like "I'll open my spot for you." Having said all that, 20 Y.O. isn't quite as annoying as Jackson's last few CDs.

For one thing, she keeps her clothes on in the booklet, if not in her music. But at least she keeps that music moving along, delivering 11 tunes and a few brief interludes in less than 50 minutes.

Finally, her collaborators -- longtime producers Jam and Lewis, along with beau Jermaine Dupri and others -- supply her with a slate of hooky, groove-laced backdrops that keep the mood upbeat and fun instead of aggressively skanky.

Janet is still a long way from acting her age, but at least 20 Y.O. feels like a step in the right direction.
