MYSOUL
Full of soulBy DARRYL STERDAN -- Winnipeg Sun
Jacksoul MySoul (Sony-BMG) Soul, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. It is if the beholder is Jacksoul's Haydain Neale, anyway. Take his covers CD MySoul. On this surprisingly eclectic set, Neale and his band show soul is not confined to Motown, Memphis and Philly. Of course, they run the usual bases with Curtis Mayfield's Superfly, Sam Cooke's Change is Gonna Come, Teddy Pendergrass's Love TKO and Eddie Floyd's Knock on Wood. But they also throw in plenty of curve balls from way out in left field, unlocking the deep grooves and supple melodies at the heart of white-boy rockers like Bowie's Ashes to Ashes, Smashing Pumpkins' 1979, Radiohead's High and Dry and Jane's Addiction's Been Caught Stealing. Hell, they even turn Ashlee Simpson's Pieces of Me, Blue Rodeo's Try and The Guess Who's These Eyes into tracks that wouldn't be out of place at the Apollo. Maybe you can't imagine Burton and Randy as soul men, but Neale apparently saw it all along. And that unique viewpoint makes MySoul one of the more memorable -- and beautiful -- covers discs of late.
