This year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is reconnecting with its inner hipster.
After booking classic-rock headliners like Roger Waters, Paul McCartney and Prince over the past couple of years, the festival is returning to its edgier ways in 2010, with a lineup topped by rap superstar Jay-Z, British art-rockers Muse and Damon Albarn's cartoon-rock ensemble Gorillaz.
Other notable acts on the mid-April bill: Them Crooked Vultures, the supergroup of QOTSA's Josh Homme, Foo Fighters's Dave Grohl and Led Zep's John Paul Jones; college rockers Vampire Weekend; Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke; Jack White's latest side project The Dead Weather; Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas; synth-rockers MGMT and more (see full list below).
The roster is also heavy on reunion tours, with appearances by slacker-rock ensemble Pavement; Public Image Limited, led by former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon (ne Rotten); new wave spud-boys Devo; emo pioneers Sunny Day Real Estate; hip-hoppers De La Soul; rockers Faith No More; ska legends The Specials; and even '60s funk icons Sly and the Family Stone.
This year's Coachella festival runs from April 16-18 in Indio, Calif., about 200 kilometres east of Los Angeles. Three-day general admission passes cost $269 and go on sale Jan. 22. See www.coachella.com for more info.
