ACROSS THE SEA OF SUNS
Jefferson Starship
(Zebra / Koch)
No, this isn't the Starship that's playing McPhillips Street Station in a couple of weeks. That's Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas. This is the real Starship. Or at least the realer Starship, since it has two original members -- Paul Kantner and Marty Balin -- along with a bunch of no-names and newbies. And if that ain't disappointing enough, the two-CD Across the Sea of Suns, their third live set in five years, sounds like it was recorded at a bar for a crowd of dozens. Or perhaps most of the audience simply dozed off while listening to these tired '60s-rock dinosaurs slogging through the tar pit of their back catalogue, dredging up long-winded versions of fossils like Miracles, Hearts and even Somebody to Love. Hell, even Mickey Thomas couldn't be duller than this. Which raises the question: Why don't they all just form one big, crappy Starship and get it over with?
