A HOLIDAY COLLECTION
By MIKE ROSS
JOY: A HOLIDAY COLLECTION Jewel (Warner) "Joy" is not the word that comes to mind when listening to this old-fashioned rendering of traditional Christmas fare, plus a few original songs (one actually sung in Latin). "Sensitive" is more like it. Pillowed by lush orchestra, bells and churchy choirs, Jewel pilots her sleigh down the middle of the snowy road to the village of self-indulgence. She brings the same clear voice and earnest delivery to Ave Maria (also sung in Latin) as she does to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. She's even recast her hit Hands as a "Christmas version." If you want fun, funky diversions of the usual holiday music, look elsewhere. This is the straight goods - comfy sweater music to be listened to with misty eyes as you contemplate the true, religious meaning of Christmas. What else would you expect from the young and tediously self-serious performer whose very name speaks of preciousness? Track Listing
