Jurassic 5
Feedback
(Interscope/Universal)

And then there really were five. For their fourth album, L.A. hip-hop collective Jurassic 5 are without the services of premiere DJ and producer Cut Chemist (who dropped his own album the same week).

It's not the only change: Feedback is reportedly a conscious attempt to propel the funky quintet from the underground to the mainstream. Which translates to poppier tracks, guests like Dave Matthews Band, high-profile samples of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Al Green, and higher-profile producers like Scott Storch and Salaam Remi.

And to their credit, wicked jams like Baby Please, Get it Together, Turn it Out and Red Hot may be enough to give the Jurassics the shiny future they desire (though they're hardly the group's most innovative or daring work).

Ironically, though, the two coolest cuts are the old-school Radio and In the House -- both of which harken back to the day of Sugar Hill, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.

Which goes to show: Feedback is fine, but a perfect echo wins every time.
