Kaiser Chiefs
Yours Truly, Angry Mob
(B-Unique-Polydor/Universal)
"I won't be the one to disappoint you," promises Ricky Wilson. Wanna bet?
Truth is, we can imagine plenty of folks will be disappointed by Yours Truly, Angry Mob, the sophomore disc from Wilson and his Kaiser Chiefs.
At the top of that list: Anyone who expects the album to replicate the spiky Britpop of their breakthrough 2005 debut Employment. As is so often the case on "the difficult second album," this 13-track set finds the lads taking a more mature, thoughtful and expansive approach -- toning down the silliness, weighing the cost-benefit ratio of their newfound fame and even dipping their toes in sociopolitical waters over the well-crafted strains of more ambitious and textured midtempo rock fare.
Sure, the bouncy first single Ruby is tailor-made for both the pop charts and the arena, while the nostalgically punky Highroyds, the thumpy Learnt My Lesson Well and the propulsive Everything is Average Nowadays pack a decently zippy punch.
Still, none of them -- nor anything else here -- delivers quite the same irresistible, irreverent kick as I Predict a Riot or Everyday I Love You Less and Less.
Right or wrong, expect the angry mob to feel the same way about Yours Truly.
