Concert Review: Ke$ha

Molson Canadian Amphitheatre, Toronto - August 14, 2011

It took her a little while to find that seedy, trashy animal magnetism she exudes so well, but when she did, pop singer Ke$ha was money in the bank.

Headlining the Wham Bam staged by a local radio station Sunday night at Toronto’s Molson Canadian Amphitheatre, the musician brought her Get Sleazy world tour to a sizable but far from sold-out audience, primarily young and female. Yet the opening was a bit tame for Ke$ha which at best was a tad awkward.

Surrounded by keyboards on the second tier of a stage setup which looked like it had been welded together at the last minute, the performer began with Sleazy but not really making a connection. Once she came down from that perch for Take It Off that stiffness slowly melted away.

Desiring to see everyone on their “worst behavior” for the show, Ke$ha finally loosened up on Blow which had her and some supporting dancers shooting glitter-like confetti into the crowd. And after looking anything but a guitarist on F--- Him He’s A DJ, she strapped on a guitar resembling a machine gun for Blah Blah Blah that included a give and take of, well, “blah.”

Having reportedly written songs for Britney Spears – who was closing out her two-night stand just down the road at Air Canada Centre – Ke$ha has tapped into catchy, party-fuelled pop as evidenced by singles like We R Who We R and Your Love Is My Drug, both having the desired fun effect with the dancing crowd. But she can also slow things down as on The Harold Song that garnered a solid response.

Occasionally writhing around the stage, banging a drum and swigging some Budweiser, Ke$ha one-upped herself with some theatrics. She apparently graduated from Gene Simmons’ Academy of Gore during Cannibal, gnawing on (hopefully) fake body organs as crimson oozed down her chin.

Meanwhile the highlight might have been on Grow A Pear. Getting a 17-year-old fan named Josh from the audience, Ke$ha taped him to a chair as she danced around him. However he wasn’t too lucky as somebody dressed like a penis ran onstage and proceeded to hit the youngster in the face. “Welcome to puberty,” she said to the teen.

Stating it was “f------ epic” to headline the venue after playing a handful of tunes as a support act previously, Ke$ha closed the main set with Tik Tok that put a nice exclamation point on the show.

Earlier, buzz act LMFAO played one of the more memorable, energized support sets in years. With plenty of backup dancers, foam fingers and a giant inflatable zebra that fans kept up in the air like a beach ball, the band embodied fun and showmanship on Shots and Champagne Showers as a few bottles of bubbly were uncorked and sprayed onto fans.

The group – fronted by singers/DJs Redfoo and SkyBlu – almost stole the show with their signature Party Rock Anthem which had everyone shuffling on stage. Other highlights included Take It To The Hole and Sorry For Party Rocking.
