LONDON, Ont. - It began as a post on Facebook and Twitter, a call for local dancers for Kid Rock's upcoming concert.
It turned into an online dust-up over whether the John Labatt Centre should be trying to hire scantily-clad women for the outspoken rocker's Saturday gig at the JLC.
"Classy," said one sarcastic fan who weighed in.
But others praised Kid Rock for offering to pay the women $200 to dance on stage during two songs.
It all started in a hasty post Thursday on the JLC's Facebook and Twitter pages to Kid Rock fans, saying four "girls" were needed to dance in the London show for $200 each.
While cowboy boots were optional, the dancers would have to wear a bikini, short shorts and a tank top. The post also said the arena would pick the "lucky winners" Friday at Cowboys Ranch.
Providing the dancers was part of the deal under which Kid Rock would perform, said Brian Ohl, the JLC's general manager.
"He's looking for four dancers and we were instructed to find some dancers," he said.
The arena has never helped acts find dancers before, he said. But when country superstar Shania Twain came to the JLC, her team asked arena staff to help them find drummers and they did, said Ohl.
Ohl said while most of the Facebook page comments are positive, he understands the concerns of those who reacted negatively.
But having the women dance on stage is "part of the show," said Ohl.
"In every show he does he has four local women come up and . . . they're on stage dancing. They're asking them to participate in the concert and he's paying them to do that, but he's looking for local women to do that."
But Megan Walker, executive director of the London Abused Women's Centre, said the request amounts to the JLC "pimping out" the dancers to Kid Rock.
"I find it very offensive," she said.
While other bands and artists pull fans on stage to dance, they don't dictate what they wear, she noted.
"This suggests they want them to dress in an sexually exploitative manner," said Walker.
She said the arena could have hired professional dancers or someone else to choose the women.
