Krall, Watchmen make big chart noise
By JOHN SAKAMOTO

Jazz phenom Diana Krall posted one of the smallest second-week declines in recent chart history, and Winnipeg's The Watchmen made a robust debut, as Canadian acts claimed half of the six best-selling albums in the country.

After becoming the first jazz album ever to debut at No. 1 on the SoundScan Canada album charts, Krall's slinky "The Look Of Love" sold another 25,839 copies last week, on top of the 30,049 in week one, to hold onto the top spot for a second consecutive week.

Canadian rockers Nickelback, enjoying a breakthrough month in the U.S., took the No. 2 position, as "Silver Side Up" moved another 21,426 copies across Canada.

The week's top debut went to The Watchmen, whose bargain-priced double-CD set "Slomotion" sold an impressive 7,908 copies, good for a No. 6 showing. That total trumped the first-week performance of the band's previous album, "Silent Radar", which sold 4,985 copies in its initial chart appearance in April 1998.

Elsehwere in the SoundScan Top 10, the year's most remarkable success story continues to gather momentum, as Enya's "A Day Without Rain" moves up three spots to No. 4, on sales of 11,226 copies. The low-profile new age pop album has now sold an astonishing 341,200 copies in Canada during its 45-week chart run.

Notable debuts this week include country star Martina McBride's "Greatest Hits" at No. 31, dance compilation "Club Cutz 505" at No. 45, and the return of critically acclaimed U.K. act Spiritualized, whose "Let It Come Down" entered at No. 99.

In the U.S., rapper Jay-Z continued his stay at the top, selling 173,663 more copies of "Blueprint" to edge out Alicia Keys for the No.1 spot. The compilation "Totally Hits 2001" made the week's highest U.S. debut, entering at No. 3.

Here are the 10 best-selling albums across the country last week, according to SoundScan Canada:

1. Diana Krall, The Look Of Love 25,839

2. Nickelback, Silver Side Up 21,426

3. Alicia Keys, Songs In A Minor 13,375

4. Enya, A Day Without Rain 11,226

5. Jay-Z, Blueprint 9,370
