Diana Krall
From This Moment On
(Verve/Universal)
She's the queen of contemporary jazz. She's married to Elvis Costello. She's expecting twins. In other words, life is pretty swell for Diana Krall right now. And the 41-year-old singer-pianist's infectious happiness is written all over her 10th album From This Moment On.
Listen no further than the swinging title cut -- "No more blue songs / Only whoop-de-songs," she sings. And for the most part she keeps her word.
Alternately backed by a boisterous big band and a crispy little combo, Krall celebrates with joyful renditions of Isn't This a Lovely Day, Exactly Like You, Come Dance With Me and Day In Day Out -- though more sombre fare like Little Girl Blue, Willow Weep for Me and Boulevard of Broken Dreams shows she hasn't lost perspective.
Admittedly, folks who were hoping Krall would pick up where she left off on the more contemporary, innovative and personal Girl in the Other Room might be bummed.
But the jazz purists who have been waiting for her to get back to her old self will agree life is good.
