Album Review: Kravitz, Lenny

LENNY
By MIKE ROSS

LENNY
Lenny Kravitz
(Virgin)

Lenny has found a formula that works beyond his love of the '60s and '70s - crafting a sexy hybrid of rock, funk and blues that's all his own. Well, it's early Zeppelin, actually, but let's not split hairs. It works.

Now only if he could bring something different to the mix. Lenny sounds like he's on autopilot with his latest record, in stores Tuesday. He settles on a groove that feels good, goes on about love, sex, war or some combination and then just lets the song run its course. His lyrics are no more insightful than they've ever been - loaded with cliches, which you can hear right off the bat in Battlefield of Love. Think of the possibilities.

This doesn't mean there aren't winners here. Lenny has culled his flamboyance in favour of bare-bones rockers - guitar, bass, drums, a Beatles lick here, a Hendrix vibe there and maybe a little junk on the vocals, that's it - which is refreshing, actually. Formula or not, this is a good album to rock out to if you don't want to think too much. (More on: Lenny Kravitz).
