Joel Kroeker's not an easy person to pin down musically. The songs on his second album, Melodrama, are all over the map, and his tour itinerary includes stops at folk festivals, rock clubs and sometimes even jazz venues. Yet when the Winnipeg-born, Vancouver-based singer/songwriter sits back to listen to a favourite album, it's more likely to be a minimalist composition by Steve Reich or Brian Eno than any of the above. In this age of formats, where are we supposed to slot him?
"I've been thinking about that for a long time," says Kroeker. "I did my master's degree in music, specifically on the singer/songwriter genre. You can't really call it a genre, I guess, but it's kind of a helpful category to lump the rest of us into. I wouldn't define my own music as any particular genre, because I don't tend to stay working in any one style for very long."
