Album Review: lang, k.d.

LIVE BY REQUEST
By JANE STEVENSON

LIVE BY REQUEST
k.d. lang
(Warner)

I thought Alberta's finest vocal export was about to make a big comeback with her breezy, melodic last album, Invincible Summer. That didn't happen, and I don't expect it will with this recording of her recent A&E Live By Request concert either.

But the 14-song collection serves as a reminder of Lang's considerable vocal strength and versatility on such Invincible Summer songs as Summerfling, The Consequence Of Falling and Simple, bluesier torch numbers Trail Of Broken Hearts, Don't Smoke In Bed and Wash Me Clean, and her always astonishing take on Roy Orbison's Crying.

Sentimental favourites I could have done without include the twangy Big Boned Gal, the kitschy Miss Chatelaine and her biggest hit, Constant Craving. Naturally, they get the biggest response from the studio audience.

One nice Toronto connection is the presence of bassist David Piltch, Lang's songwriting partner from Invincible Summer.

Lang is playing Montreal's Molson Centre with Tony Bennett tonight. Sadly, there is no Toronto date for the fabulously matched duo.
