Avril, Shania move up charts
By JOHN WILLIAMS

Avril Lavigne and Shania Twain have turned their Juno successes into an increase in sales on the Canadian album charts.

Lavigne, who scooped up four awards at the April 6 ceremony, saw her smash album "Let Go" rise from eighth to fifth on sales of 10,900, an increase of more than 3,300 from last week.

Twain also benefitted from her three Juno wins (which included the prestigious artist of the year award) with "Up!" moving from ninth to seventh on sales 8,300 -- an increase of more than 1,500.

Not surprisingly, the Juno Awards 2003 compilation moved from No. 18 last week to 10th this week, and Nickelback, who took home the songwriter award, made a huge jump from No. 97 to 57.

Meanwhile, the top four positions on the charts remained the same with French compilation "Star Academie" (57,700) holding onto the top spot despite a dramatic 67 per cent drop in sales from last week. Celine Dion's "One Heart" (20,900) held steady at No. 2, followed by Linkin Park's "Meteora" (14,100) in third, and Norah Jones's "Come Away With Me" (13,200) in fourth.

50 Cent's "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'" (9,800) was unchanged in sixth and The White Stripes' "Elephant" (8,000) struggled in it's second week, tumbling from fifth to eighth.

Godsmack's "Faceless" (7,800) had the highest debut of the week, entering in at No. 9.

Other notable debuts included Lisa Marie Presley's "To Whom It Nay Concern" at No. 12, I Mother Earth's "Quicksilver Meat Dream" at No. 20, and James Taylor's "The Best Of James Taylor" at No. 41.

In the U.S., Godsmack debuted at No. 1 with sales of 266,800, Linkin Park (186,200) fell to second, 50 Cent (159,300) slipped to third, the compilation "Now 12" (143,100) placed fourth, and Lisa Marie Presley (142,200) premiered in fifth.

Here are the 10 best-selling albums in Canada, according to Nielsen SoundScan:

1. VARIOUS ARTISTS -- STAR ACADEMIE (57,700)
