Thousands of Canadians dove into their wallets to buy up Avril Lavigne's new album "Under My Skin."
The 19-year-old Napanee native's sophomore CD shot to the top of the Canadian album charts, selling 63,100 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan Canada.
In comparison, Lavigne's mega-selling debut "Let Go" entered the charts at No. 2 with sales of 19,900 back in June of 2002, less than a third of the first-week total of her new effort.
"Let Go" didn't reach No. 1 until September of 2002.
Lavigne also grabbed the No. 1 spot south of the border, selling an impressive 355,000 copies of "Under My Skin" in the U.S., according to figures from Undercover.com.
Elsewhere in the Canadian top 10, metalheads Slipknot entered the charts at No. 2 with "Volume 3: (The Subliminal Verses)" (16,600), while Diana Krall's "The Girl in the Other Room" fell down to third after occupying the top spot for three weeks.
George Michael's "Patience," his first new studio effort since 1996's "Older," jumped up seven positions to fourth, Usher's "Confessions" remained in fifth, and D12's "D12 World" dropped two notches to sixth.
Alanis Morissette's "So-Called Chaos, which checked in at No. 2 last week, sank five spots to seventh, and the Black Eyed Peas' "Elephunk" claimed the eighth spot.
French artist Francis Cabrel's "Les Beaux Degats" entered the top 10 at No. 9, and rapper Method Man's latest album "Tical O: The Prequel" moved down seven to No. 10.
Other notable debuts included Everlast's "White Trash Beautiful" at No. 26 and Lonestar's "Let's Be Us Again" at No. 32.
