Avril Lavigne's "The Best Damn Thing" is the best damn album on the Canadian charts this week.
The 22-year-old Napanee native's third full-length disc checked in at No. 1 with over 68,000 in sales, making it the biggest debut of '07, according to Nielsen SoundScan data.
The album surpassed the first-week success of her last CD, 2004's "Under My Skin," which racked up 63,000 in its debut.
The release also marks the best sales week on the charts since October of 2006, when Gregory Charles's "I Think of You" came in at No. 1, racking up 109,000 copies.
Lavigne also grabbed the No. 1 spot south of the border, selling 286,000 copies of "The Best Damn Thing" in the U.S.
Back in Canada, Isabelle Boulay's "De Retour a la Source" (35,000) came in at No. 2, and Nine Inch Nails' latest effort "Year Zero" (25,000) clocked in at No. 3.
The movement up top forced Marie-Elaine Thibert's "Comme Ca" to fall from No. 1 to No. 4, Marc-Andre Fortin's self-titled CD premiered at No. 5, and Les Grandes Gueus's "Il Etait Une Fois" entered at No. 6.
The big debuts meant bad news for last week's front-runners. Timbaland's "Timbaland Presents: Shock Value" fell from No. 2 to No. 7, Hilary Duff's "Dignity" spiralled down from No. 3 to No. 8, Daniel Belanger's "L'echec du Materiel" slipped from No. 4 to No. 9, and Nelly Furtado's "Loose" went south five spots to No. 10.
The only other notable debut this week went to Joel Plaskett Emergency's "Ashtray Rock", which entered at No. 32.
In the U.S., NIN placed second, followed by "NOW 24" in third, Bucky Covington's self-titled debut in fourth, and Martina McBride's "Waking Up Laughing" in fifth.
