Avril, Monkeys hot on charts
U.K.'s Arctic Monkeys made an impressive debut this week, but they weren't the top bananas on the Canadian album charts. That accomplishment went to Avril Lavigne, whose album "The Best Damn Thing" remained locked at No. 1 for a second straight week, despite a large drop in sales. Her new disc rang up 26,000 copies, compared to 68,000 last week -- a drop of 62 per cent. Lavigne also stayed at No. 1 spot south of the border, selling 122,000 copies of "The Best Damn Thing" in the U.S. Back in Canada, the Monkeys had the best first week on the charts, coming in at No. 4 with sales of 7,000 -- their best-ever chart placement. Sandwiched in between was Isabelle Boulay's "De Retour a la Source" and Nine Inch Nails' latest effort "Year Zero," which both held steady at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Marie-Elaine Thibert's "Comme Ca" fell one position to No. 5, Timbaland's "Timbaland Presents: Shock Value" came up one to No. 6, and Mika's "Life in Cartoon Motion" moved from No. 11 to No. 7. Nelly Furtado's "Loose" climbed up two notches to No. 8, Hilary Duff's "Dignity" slipped one to No. 9, Les Grandes Gueus's "Il Etait Une Fois" rounded out the top 10 at No. 10. Other notable debuts included Tiesto's "Elements of Life" at No. 24, and Simply Red's "Stay" at No. 41. In the U.S., Joe's "Ain't Nothing Like Me" premiered in second, followed by NIN in third, "NOW 24" in fourth, and Daughtry's self-titled debut in fifth. |
