EARLY DAYS: BEST OF VOLUME 1
Led Zeppelin
Never a singles band, Led Zeppelin's music is best sampled by listening to one of their studio albums in its entirety. This hasn't stopped Atlantic from assembling rarity-free, single-disc Led Zep best-ofs. This initial volume cherry picks the most popular tracks from the group's first four albums. One can argue the merits of this approach -- fans will likely have all of these songs already, the uninitiated would be better served with a larger retrospective -- but the music itself is beyond reproach: The four-on-the-floor drive of Rock and Roll; the juiced up blues-rock bluster of Whole Lotta Love; the banshee wailing of Immigrant Song; the woozy, self-explanatory Dazed and Confused; and, of course, the ludicrously revered Stairway to Heaven. Alas, the selection isn't very balanced. There are four songs from I, five from IV (an album with only eight tracks) and just two apiece from II and III. What, no Living Loving Maid?
