Songs From Black Mountain
(Epic/Sony BMG)
Ooh. Black Mountain. Sounds heavy. Dark. Ominous. Imposing. Evil. Harsh. Rocky. Sounds like the sort of place where thunder splits the sky, a satanic overlord rules and blood flows freely.
In short, a fitting setting and inspiration for a great rock album, right? Wrong.
Live's seventh CD has as much truth in advertising as a James Blunt CD called Songs of Rape and Pillage.
Anyone still hoping against hope that these Pennsylvania post-grungers would reconnect with the ferocity of Throwing Copper is going to be disappointed by yet another sweepingly anthemic, embarrassingly earnest set of romantic-rock cliches ("My love is here to stay") and spiritual pap ("Think of gentle Jesus") from the increasingly wimpy and irrelevant Ed Kowalczyk.
In the small mercies department, this 12-song disc is barely 40 minutes long.
Guess even Ed doesn't want to spend too much time on Black Mountain.
