Album Review: Jennifer Lopez

J TO THA L-O! THE REMIXES
By JANE STEVENSON

J TO THA L-O! THE REMIXES
Jennifer Lopez
(Epic-Sony)

The big question here is: Does Lopez's disposable pop-R&B improve with the remix, rap-infused treatment?

Yes and no, with emphasis on the latter.

In stores Tuesday, this collection features remixers ranging from ex-boyfriend Sean "P. Diddy" Combs to Rodney Jerkins tackling songs from Lopez's first two albums, On The 6 and J.Lo.

But not even rapper Fat Joe can beef up her weak hit Love Don't Cost A Thing. And Ja Rule, whose deep voice and attitude inexplicably brought some street cred to the chart-topping song I'm Real, is on board for another revamped single, Ain't It Funny. Both are painful to sit through.

The only highlights are of the bust-a-move dance variety: Latin-tinged, percussive takes on Walking On Sunshine and Let's Get Loud, Jerkins' classy, cool grooves on If You Had My Love, and Hex Hector's pulsating techno version of Waiting For Tonight.

Curious, too, is Combs' remix of Feelin' So Good, in which he coos things like, "Jenny Lo, P. Diddy." Wonder how Lopez's new husband, Cris Judd, feels about that?

Judd co-wrote the sappy new ballad Alive with his wife and Cory Rooney. The song, completely out of place here, is featured in Lopez's upcoming movie Enough. (More on: Jennifer Lopez).
