THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION
Patty Loveless
(MCA Nashville)
Now just what are we gonna do when all this turn-of-the-century fever ends? We won't get any more cosmically important best-ofs, no brilliantly chosen retrospectives of the accomplishments of such artists as the Jackson Five, Neil Diamond and the Allman Brothers Band and their accomplishments over the last thousand years.
Anyway, yeah, maybe this thing has run its course and we should move on.
But for now, enjoy Patty Loveless, whose millennial mark started sometime around 1957, when she was born, and really made a splash, according to this collection, only 13 years ago with the release of If My Heart Had Windows.
Nice song, but of course the best is Timber, I'm Falling in Love, which reminds me of Big Valley Jamboree, except the part where rural kids in baseball hats are yelling racial slurs at certain booth vendors (it happens - LOTS).
Loveless has a high, piercing voice and she puts it to use without ever (here, anyway) diving into vapid nonsense. Super-producer Tony Brown is always there, holding her hand, but he has taste when he wants to, and Loveless is one of his best projects.
The Night's Too Long is another easy song to listen to, and there are lots.
If you don't know Loveless, here's your chance. You may not get one for another 1,000 years, after all.
