Madonna's tour proves profitable
Madonna to launch her North American tour -- expect more than a few Sticky situations

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Madonna's personal life may be sticky but her latest tour is sure proving to be sweet.

It's estimated The Material Girl -- who denied earlier this summer that her marriage to British director Guy Ritchie was on the rocks amid rumours of a relationship with New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez -- has already made $120 million from her so-called Sticky and Sweet Tour, according to MTV-UK.

And that's just after nearly all of her 17 European stadium dates sold out.

Madonna still has the North and South American legs to go, starting tonight in New Jersey at the IZOD Centre.

Her Canadian shows, which all sold out in 30 minutes, are Oct. 18-19 at Toronto's Air Canada Centre, Oct. 22-23 at Montreal's Bell Centre and Oct. 30 at Vancouver's B.C. Place Stadium.

Judging from early European reviews, Madge has made 50 -- she turned a half-century old back in August -- absolutely fabulous with a killer body and matching stamina, thanks to a strict training regime that includes yoga, Pilates sessions, and jogging.

"In the premiere league of song-and-dance spectaculars, the queen of pop remains unrivalled and undefeated" raved the London Times.

"The choreography, visuals and live talent were world class and mind-blowingly well-executed, intelligent and witty," wrote Britain's The Independent.

She played to the largest Swiss audience ever, performing in front of 72,000 people in Zurich -- not to mention 73,000 at London's Wembley Stadium, the latter where she was just fined this week nearly $250,000 for staying on stage beyond the venue's strict 10:30 p.m. curfew by some 40 minutes.

"Now that I've warmed up in Europe, I'm ready to come home and do the show for my U.S. fans," remarked Madonna in a statement provided by tour promoter Live Nation.

Apparently, there's a lot behind the lady and her show.

The Sticky And Sweet Tour's includes 3,500 wardrobe pieces, 36 clothing designers, 100 pairs of kneepads, 12 trampolines, 69 guitars, a travelling personnel of 250, five keyboards for musical director Kevin Antunes, three members of the Russian Romani (Gypsy) group the Kolpakov Trio, 18 dancers, and one set of Swarovski crystal encrusted ear phones.

The concert is broken down into four segments inspired by "gangsta pimp," Romanian folk, rave and dance.

She reportedly performs for two hours and the set list from the world tour launch on Aug. 23 in Cardiff, Wales, included no fewer than eight songs from her latest R&B-hip-hop influenced album, Hard Candy, alongside re-invented older hits such as a heavy-metal version of Borderline.

Given it's Madonna -- who performed on a cross during her 2006 Confessions road trip -- the tour hasn't been without controversy.

In the Sticky And Sweet show, she draws comparisons between Republican U.S. presidential candidate John McCain and Adolf Hitler (Barack Obama is linked to Gandhi) and her old pal Britney Spears makes a video appearance during that old bondage number Human Nature.

Headlines have also dogged Madonna on the personal front.

Her brother Christopher Ciccone published a gossipy memoir called, Life With My Sister, earlier this summer and she faced speculation about her relationship with A-Rod in July with his soon-to-be-ex-wife Cynthia contending Madonna had brainwashed the baseball star into the ways of her chosen religion, Kabbalah.

Madonna has denied any impropriety with Rodriguez, claiming to have met him through their mutual manager Guy Oseary, and that she and Ritchie were not divorcing. All the while US Weekly reported just this week there was a cozy Madge-A-Rod dinner in New York City on Tuesday night.

Welcome to the simple life of Madonna.
