Album Review: Madonna

I'M GOING TO TELL YOU A SECRET
CD makes up for self-indulgent DVD
By -- Winnipeg Sun

Madonna
I'm Going to Tell You a Secret
(Warner)

"I have a huge ego and I need to do something about it," concedes Madonna on I'm Going to Tell You a Secret. "How can I change?" Well, for a start, how about giving us a DVD that isn't derivative and self-indulgent?

The video half of this two-disc set has over 140 minutes of footage from Madge's Re-Invention tour -- but less than an hour is live fare. The bulk is B&W backstage filler a la Truth or Dare. You see Madonna and her kids getting lost in their massive hotel suites. Madonna praying with her dancers and musicians. Madonna reading poems about her "cage full of light" and -- no fooling -- her assistant. Madonna referring to herself as "the queen." Madonna whining because husband Guy Ritchie isn't at her beck and call. Madonna praising her dad. Madonna having fun at her birthday party. Madonna having no fun at Guy's birthday party.

And nearly 20 minutes of Madonna in Israel, where she visits holy sites with a camera crew -- and then whines about paparazzi. Oy. On the one hand, it's clear why she skimps on the live footage -- this set is supposed to hype the current leg of her tour, a massive, high-tech production with catwalks, a conveyor belt, a stage that rises, falls and rotates, and even a skateboard halfpipe. But it still sucks to sit through all that video and see almost as much of her limo as her show.

Thankfully, the CD takes up the slack, delivering more than an hour of newer fare like American Life and Music, peppered with oldies like Vogue, Holiday and Like a Prayer.

Next time Madonna wants to share a secret, she should just leave the cameras at home.
