The rhyme stuff
Sign of the times: The word "Glock" (a make of handgun popular among street gangs) can be heard on Maestro Fresh Wes's new album, Ever Since.

Relax. Maestro has not gone gangsta. The word he uses is actually "McGlock." Remember, he's Canadian, eh? It flies by pretty fast: "Y'all remember me like Sarah McLach! Yeah, we're ready to rock!"

Hip hop comes of age in Canada
It's an odd feeling to be sitting across the table from the grandfather of a Canadian music scene and realize he's only two years past the magic milestone of 30.

But most people would agree that mainstream hip hop within our borders began in 1989 with Toronto rapper Maestro Fresh-Wes and his monster hit Let Your Backbone Slide, which is still the best-selling Canadian hip hop single ever.
