Matchbox Twenty's chart-loitering debut Yourself or Someone Like You proved there's still a big audience for vaguely rootsy and reasonably melodic mainstream rock songs about girls. Nothing fancy, nothing revolutionary, nothing wrong with that. Still, the newly rechristened quintet (formerly Matchbox 20 -- gee, don't they have better things to do?) couldn't resist spending their riches on a few unnecessary luxury items for their long-awaited sophomore disc. Horns blare throughout Black & White People without ever meshing with the song. And the band should have just said no to the lavish orchestrations which lend an aura of unappealing self-importance to If You're Gone, Leave, the jazzy You Won't Be Mine and an unlisted 14th track, a grandiose orchestral instrumental that suggests Matchbox Twenty harbours a secret desire to be The Moody Blues. Luckily, they mostly stick to the guitar-pop basics and songs such as the first single Bent, the title track and the lovely Last Beautiful Girl are as good as the best songs from the debut.
