ROOM FOR SQUARES
John Mayer
(Sony)
A guy who can get away with a lyric like "One mile to every inch of your skin like porcelain, one pair of candy lips and your bubblegum tongue" is a force to be reckoned with. If you can get past that without gagging, read on. Atlanta's John Mayer is a powerful new entry to the rootsy-singer-songwriter-smart-pop-however-you-wanna-label-it sweepstakes.
Imagine a vocally more-pleasant Dave Matthews writing for adult contemporary radio. Honest, revealing lyrics like those found in Love Song For No One - "so tired of being alone/hurry up and get here" - and gorgeous melodies dominate this album. Some of these sunny pop tunes are too cute and clever for their own good (he's a Berklee guy), but there are astounding examples of songcraft here. Highly recommended for those not afraid to get in touch with their sensitive side.
