Album Review: Sarah McLachlan

REMIXED
By JANE STEVENSON

REMIXED
Sarah McLachlan
(Nettwerk)

Anyone going through McLachlan withdrawal since she took a break to try to start a family with husband-drummer Ash Sood will appreciate some of her hits getting the electronic remix treatment.

Everyone else might want to take a pass.

The collection includes material spanning her 1989 debut Touch to 1997's Surfacing -- and the results are mixed.

Not that effort wasn't made to get some of the best remixers out there, everyone from BT to William Orbit.

It's just that sometimes the slower songs sung in McLachlan's ethereal voice don't suit the direction in which the remixers take them -- in this case to the dance floor.

In that awkward group are DJ Tiesto's Sweet Surrender, Angel (Dusted Remix), Possession (Rabbit In The Moon Mix) and Hold On (BT Mix).

On the plus side are cool renditions of I Love You (BT Mix), her Delerium collaboration Silence (DJ Tiesto's In Search Of Sunrise Mix) -- already a huge hit in Europe -- and Plenty (Fade Mix).

Prospective buyers should also be aware that the majority of the songs here are from McLachlan's last two albums, Surfacing and 1993's Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.

Sometimes you get the feeling that her label is squeezing all they can out of McLachlan's material while their cash cow is on hiatus.

She's apparently working on a new studio album. (More on: Sarah McLachlan)
