When Murray McLauchlan penned his 1998 autobiography Getting Out of Here Alive, he had no idea of a dramatic chapter that would lie ahead.

Last December, the Canadian folk singer-songwriter and licensed pilot went in for a routine aviation medical exam. Though McLauchlan maintained a physically active lifestyle -- four karate classes a week, swimming and biking -- his doctor found anomalies in the electrocardiograph part of the examination and in an exercise stress test.
