Katharine McPhee
Katharine McPhee
(RCA/Sony BMG)
On her latest single, Katharine McPhee proclaims that she is "so over it." We couldn't agree more. We feel the same way about pointless, unoriginal albums like this disappointing debut from American Idol's fifth-season runnerup.
The tunes here come in three cookie-cutter shapes: 1) Sassy, Beyonce-style hip-hop strutters like Open Toes, Dangerous and Love Story, some of which were produced by Timbaland's sidekick Danja; 2) Paper-thin pop-chart baubles like Over It and Not Ur Girl; 3) Wrenching Christinafied ballads like Home, Better Off Alone, Neglected and Ordinary World.
The latter category overwhelmingly dominates, especially on the album's back half. To her credit, she can technically handle them all. But like most of the Idol performers, she never really makes the songs her own.
Bottom line: At this point in her career, McPhee doesn't have the X factor -- the personality, or experience, or charisma or confidence or whatever quality it is that spells the difference between predictable and inspired, between runnerup and winner, between talented karaoke singer and musical artist.
She'd better find it, and fast -- before the fickle Idol hordes get over her faster than Justin whatshisname.
