Album Review: Megadeth

THE WORLD NEEDS A HERO
By DARRYL STERDAN

THE WORLD NEEDS A HERO
Megadeth
(Sanctuary/EMI)

Never mind what the world needs. What it doesn't need is another Alice Cooper impersonator -- which is, sadly, what Megadeth's Dave Mustaine continues to morph into as he ages. His once-venomous voice has devolved to a carbon copy of Alice's sneering nasal rasp, his intensely intricate speed-thrash diluted into Cooper's sluggish, theatro-metal. Although, to be fair, Dave still packs more riffs into each track than Alice has had in the past decade -- including the years when Megadeth rhythm guitarist Al Pitrelli was in his band. At this point, it would seem Mustaine has two choices: Put on the eyeliner and top hat or offer fellow Phoenician Cooper a job. (More on Megadeth)
