The double bill of John Fogerty and John Mellencamp was definitely double the pleasure and double the fun.
The Johns squared put their egos aside last night and proved to the 12,000 fans in attendance at the Saddledome that they've still got it.
For four hours, the singers plowed through their vast catalogs of hits, giving little indication of who was the opener and who was the headliner.
Fogerty, the former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman, got things started.
He wasted no time, immediately launching into CCR's biggest hits with Travelin' Band. From the first note, you could tell Fogerty was having a blast. With a constant grin on his face, he bounded around the stage during the high-energy It Came Out Of The Sky and Lookin' Out My Back Door.
Even when he slowed things down for the acoustic Deja Vu All Over Again, his slight lack of moxie was more than compensated for by his still-impressive vocals. His star shone brightest when he was grinding the axe during Centerfield and Proud Mary.
Though Fogerty's CCR selections were unequivocal pleasers, the crowd was clearly there for Mellencamp.
A blue-suited Mellencamp appeared on stage where he kept the good-times rolling with an energetic run through of Small Town.
He followed with the politically charged Love and Happiness and a violin-accompanied version of Lonely Ol' Night.
This being what Mellencamp has called his "greatest hits tour," it was no surprise the night was full of the singer's most famous songs.
From Paper and Fire to the obvious crowd favourites, Jack and Diane and Cherry Bomb, the memories were flowing and the crowd was pumping.
Plain and simple, it was just two American kids doing the best they can.
