In an interview on BBC Radio, the 40-year-old pop star announced that he is retiring from the music business and intends instead to put all his future songs on the Internet for free.

Speaking about his decision, he said: "I've been very well remunerated for my talents over the years so I really don't need any more of the public's money."

In the coming years, new material will only be available online and fans will be given the option to make donations to the star's favourite charities.

Explaining his reasons, he said: "It takes the pressure off to have a collection of songs every so many years, which is what nearly killed me."

He added, "I'll hopefully be a happier man, giving my music and also doing something really positive with my music."

"Patience" will be released overseas on March 16 and hits North American stores later this spring.
