Album Review: George Michael

JESUS AS A CHILD [single]
By JANE STEVENSON

JESUS TO A CHILD
George Michael
(Virgin UK VSCDX 1571)

A lengthy legal battle with Sony Music in which Michael complained he wasn't being allowed to mature musically resulted in a five-year recording moratorium -- with the exception of a few singles and a live EP -- for the former lead singer of Wham!

But the fight was resolved last year when DreamWorks, a division of the entertainment studio founded by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, bought out Michael's Sony contract for a whopping $40 million and gave him another $12 million for a two-record deal.

Now Michael has become the first artist to release music on the new DreamWorks label, although the first single finds him somberly contemplating death, spirituality and love.

Michael should have looked for inspiration from his last album,1990's Listen Without Prejudice, which contained the irrepressibly upbeat Freedom.

As for the other two tracks, there's a live gospel version of One More Try, recorded at the Concert Of Hope in England in 1993, and an instrumental version of Older, the title track off Michael's new album expected in mid-April.

Track Listing
1.Jesus To A Child
2.Freedom '93 (Live Version) [UK RELEASE ONLY]
3.One More Try (Live Gospel Version)
4.Older (Instrumental Version)
