Album Review: Buddy Miller

UNIVERSAL UNITED HOUSE OF PRAYER
By DARRYL STERDAN

UNIVERSAL UNITED HOUSE OF PRAYER
Buddy Miller
(New West/Sony)

Singer-songwriter Buddy Miller has never seemed like much of a sinner. But the country and roots veteran truly gets that old-time religion with his sixth album.

On 11 cuts that meander from rangy roots-rock to backwoods bluegrass, Miller enhances his twangy guitars and dusty vocals with uplifting lyrics, the soul-stirring backups of gospel duo Regina and Ann McCrary, and a little help from friends like current employer Emmylou Harris, his talented wife Julie Miller and old pal Jim Lauderdale.

And it is good. Very good.

Amen, brother.
