Alanis guest-stars in 'Nip/Tuck'
By ANN-MARIE McQUEEN - Sun Media

Critics might want to typecast her music, but Alanis Morissette won't allow it in the TV and movie roles she chooses to play.

Tomorrow the Ottawa singer/songwriter makes her debut in the first of a three-episode story arc on CTV's controversial plastic surgery drama Nip/Tuck.

Morissette plays Poppy, the much-younger, ego-shredding anesthesiologist girlfriend to show regular Dr. Liz Cruz (Roma Maffia). She debuts late in the program, while Cruz is under the knife, having clearly persuaded her to get liposuction.

Morissette's dispassionate Poppy shocks the not-easily offended plastic surgeons at the centre of the show -- played by Julian McMahon and Dylan Walsh -- by suggesting they tackle Cruz's upper arms, too.

"I'm not having her come down to the (Florida) Keys with me looking like a Teletubby," says a scrubs-clad Morissette.

Later she cuddles a desperate-for-love Cruz, who she has just bewildered by saying, "We'll just go back in another month and do some more."

With a new album in the works but nothing to promote, April has turned out to be one high-profile month for Morissette. On Wednesday night she guest-starred as a homeless woman on Showcase's partly improvised workplace comedy Lovespring International.

Her still-unexplained parody of the Black Eyed Peas My Humps remains tops on YouTube after gathering millions of views since it was released at the beginning of the month.

In the video, a tarted-up Morissette channels Peas' singer Fergie while crooning the song's absurd lyrics, like "I'm a-gonna get you drunk, get you drunk off my humps," to the sound of a slow, hypnotic piano.

Morissette has refused all requests to talk about the spoof, though her website does include a cheeky new update pointing to an old interview where she talks about "black eyed peas ... the food!"

Others have tried to explain the video as everything from an April Fools' Day prank to a comment on the vapidity of today's popular music.

Morissette has guest-starred on everything from Sex and the City -- where she smooched star Sarah Jessica Parker -- to Curb Your Enthusiasm to Degrassi: The Next Generation. She also played God in the feature film Dogma.

Nip/Tuck airs at 10 p.m.
